Simply put –– yes, they do! But these seeds are safe to eat and are so small that they’re hardly even noticeable.

Do Blueberries Have Seeds?

Yes! Like other fruits, blueberries do have seeds. However, it is not necessary to remove the seeds before enjoying the berries. Blueberry seeds are tiny, soft, and cause no harm to humans when consumed and digested.

Are Blueberries Seedless?

No, blueberries are not seedless.

There’s a misconception that the round fruit itself is the seed of a blueberry shrub, but the seeds are actually inside the flesh of the fruit.

Types of Blueberries

Blueberries are a popular fruit grown throughout the entire world. There are five primary varieties grown in the United States: lowbush, northern highbush, southern highbush, half-high, and rabbiteye.

  • Lowbush – These low-growing shrubs produce dark blue berries that are known for their sweetness. They need little pruning.
  • Northern Highbush – Growing on higher shrubs, the Northern highbush varieties are the most planted blueberry variety worldwide. Although highbush varieties require a lot of pruning, they grow well in various climates and are also self-fertile.
  • Southern Highbush – Similar to the Northern variety, Southern highbush varieties grow on higher shrubs. They are known to be drought-tolerant.
  • Half-High – Half-High blueberries are a cross between lowbush and highbush, and do well in colder climates.
  • Rabbiteye – These blueberries thrive in hot temperatures.

How Many Seeds Are in a Single Blueberry?

Not only do blueberries have seeds, but most blueberries will have anywhere between 10 and 20 seeds!

The amount of seeds inside of a blueberry will depend on the variety, plus how small or large each berry is.

Is It OK to Eat Seeds From Blueberries?

Do blueberries have seeds? Yes! Is it ok to eat the seeds? Absolutely! Blueberry seeds are edible and completely safe.

These seeds are different from the pits of fruits like mangoes, plums, and peaches, which can’t be eaten.

If you’ve ever eaten these berries in your lifetime, then you’ve already eaten blueberry seeds — and they didn’t cause you any harm.

Chances are you probably didn’t notice the seeds because of their size and texture. They’re so soft and small, most people won’t detect them as they eat blueberries!

Can You Grow a Blueberry from a Blueberry?

Yes, it is possible to grow a blueberry from a blueberry!

The steps are simple, and you’ll only need a few things: a single blueberry, a small pot with soil, an empty plastic bottle, and a space to transfer the plant outside (eventually).

  1. First, start with one blueberry, and smash it so that the seeds are visible.
  2. Next, plant the mashed blueberry in a small pot with soil — the same way you’d plant a regular seed.
  3. Water the blueberry lightly.
  4. Find a way to seal the pot so that it retains moisture. You can cut the bottom of a plastic bottle and use that as a cover.
  5. Once the plant sprouts and starts to outgrow the small pot, you’ll want to plant it outside.

Keep in mind that the best time to plant your blueberry bush depends on the region you live in.

What Are the Health Benefits of Blueberries?

Blueberries are not only delicious, but also good for you! Here are some incredible health benefits from eating them:

  • Rich in Antioxidants – Blueberries can help protect against free radical damage.
  • Nutrient Dense – These berries contain a number of beneficial vitamins, including Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin K.
  • Low Sugar and Low Calorie – Compared to other fruits, blueberries contain a lower amount of sugar and are a great option for those managing conditions like diabetes or insulin resistance.

When Are Blueberries in Season?

The exact timing depends on where you live, but in North America, blueberries are typically in season between the months of April and September.

While you can eat blueberries at any time of year, there are benefits to eating them while they’re in season. When fruits are in season, they can be fresher due to the time they are harvested. They can also be cheaper, due to reduced demand for out-of-season crops.
